Orthopedic Physical Therapy

The foundation of outpatient rehab: muscles, joints, tendons, and the plan that gets them working again.

What it is

Orthopedic physical therapy treats injuries and conditions of the musculoskeletal system — joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the movement patterns that connect them. It is the discipline behind most of what happens in an outpatient clinic: sprains and strains, tendinopathy, arthritis flare-ups, overuse injuries, and the stiffness and weakness that follow immobilization.

At Proof, orthopedic care starts with numbers. We measure what the injury actually took from you — range of motion, strength, tolerance for the activities that matter to you — and we re-measure on a schedule, so progress is something you can see rather than something you have to take on faith.

Who it helps

Adults of any age whose pain or restriction traces to a muscle or joint problem — whether it started with one bad lift, crept in over months, or never fully resolved after an old injury.

How we assess

A 60-minute evaluation: history, movement screen, baseline measurements of range of motion and strength, and at least one standardized functional outcome measure matched to your region and goals. You leave visit one knowing your numbers and the plan.

What treatment looks like

A progressive program combining targeted exercise, hands-on manual therapy where it earns its place, and activity-specific retraining — typically 1 to 3 visits per week, re-tested at meaningful milestones. You work with one primary therapist throughout.

Evidence & limitations

Exercise-based physical therapy is among the best-evidenced treatments in musculoskeletal medicine for pain and function. It is not instant: meaningful strength change takes weeks, and some conditions (long-standing tendinopathy, advanced arthritis) improve without fully resolving. We will tell you what the evidence supports for your diagnosis — and when another referral is the better move.

Questions, answered

Do I need a referral to start?

Michigan allows direct access to physical therapy: you can be evaluated without a referral, and treated for up to 21 days or 10 visits before a physician's involvement is required. We coordinate that step when it's needed — and some insurance plans require a referral sooner, which we check before your first visit.

How long until I feel better?

Most straightforward orthopedic problems show measurable change inside 2 to 4 weeks. Because we test objectively at baseline and at milestones, you won't have to guess whether it's working.

What should I wear?

Clothes you can move in that give access to the area we're treating — shorts for a knee, a tank or loose tee for a shoulder.
